What Got Me 40 Years Ago

The cover story in the September issue of Uncut (see my references below on how excellent this music magazine really is) targets The Kinks. What I was pleased to learn is that their hit You Really Got Me was released 40 years ago this month! Damn. I was a mere lad of 12 when I first heard the tune - clay waiting to be molded and it is now obvious that what is now being referred to as the first in the string of heavy metal tunes produced by the Davies clan was key in shaping my musical substance.

The opening rif of 5 simple notes defines rock for me.

And as you know, it was this very song that first endeared me to the "then unknown" rock group, Mott The Hoople, when their instrumetal version pierced my soul for good back in '70.

ACTION: Listen, it's ALL about the music.
